“Paradise Town Council approves new electricity provider, could save residents 10% on bills” January 15, 2025
PARADISE, Calif. – The Town of Paradise is taking steps toward offering residents a new electricity provider with the potential to save property owners up to 10% on their monthly electricity bills.
On Tuesday, the Paradise Town Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance to bring Pioneer Community Energy to the ridge.
The new energy program, known as a Community Choice Aggregation Program, would give local control over the electric supply and offer affordable electricity rates.
According to a feasibility study conducted by Pioneer Community Energy, this switch could lead to significant savings for residents. If the plan moves forward, residents could see the new provider as early as October 2027.
Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder expressed optimism about the plan, noting that as long as it functions as promised, it could be a great benefit to the community.
“We always have the option, the town included, to opt out if it doesn’t work out. There really isn’t a lot of risk of doing this,” Crowder said.
Under the proposed plan, Pioneer would purchase the electricity supply, while PG&E would continue to handle transmission and delivery through its existing infrastructure, including poles and wires.
If approved, all residents of Paradise will be automatically enrolled, but they can opt out of the program if they choose. The town will notify the community ahead of time to ensure everyone is aware of the upcoming changes.
Additionally, if the partnership is finalized, a member of the Paradise Town Council would have a seat on the Pioneer Community Energy Board of Directors.
The second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for February. Meanwhile, Oroville is also considering a partnership with Pioneer Community Energy, and Action News Now will continue to follow these developments and provide updates.
